As executive art director of Fine Cooking I directed all creative aspects (design, photography, prop and food styling) of the magazine as well as for the brand’s ancillary products, including print and digital-only special interest publications (10+ per year) and cookbooks. I also directed the still location photography for the PBS series Moveable Feast with Fine Cooking.
Part cookbook, part memoir: both elements run through this book side-by-side as well as photographs of life on the farm and beauty shots of the finished dishes. This book was selected for NPR’s list of best books, 2014. I directed the design and photography.
I designed the 2015 and 2016 annual reports, interpreting and applying new global brand guidelines for the first time in the U.S. This established the visual identity for STC publication design.
I directed the design and photography and commissioned the architectural illustrations for this follow-up to the best-selling book The Cabin, by Dale Mulfinger, the foremost expert on cabin design in North America. My brief to the photographer (who I purposely selected because she is not an architectural photographer) was to capture the necessary details but also the sense of place and mood for each location. The design was directed to be visually quiet and clean to represent the sense of retreat and tranquility associated with cabin living.
I directed the design and photography for this cookbook celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Chefs Collaborative, a driving force in supporting small farms, healthy food, and sustainable agriculture in the U.S.
I directed this inspirational and aspirational interiors photography for Moen to reflect the Danish sensibility "hygge." The assignment included location scouting, hiring and directing the photography team in pre-production, on set, and post-production.
I directed the design and talent and food photography for Food Network host Ellie Krieger’s first cookbook, which was a New York Times best-seller and won the IACP and James Beard Foundation awards for Best Cookbook with a Healthy Focus. The goal was a visual presentation that made healthy food look beautiful and inviting.
A collection of woodworking projects made using only hand tools. I worked closely with the author-photographer, including brainstorming visuals and creating a digital mood board with the author to inform and direct the design.
In collaboration with editors at Globe Pequot and Orvis®, I developed and designed this successful book prototype using photography from the Orvis company's collection. The book will be published in October 2016.
A special cookbook with a focus on the collaboration of top-name chefs and the farmers and artisans they source their ingredients from. I directed the design and photography and designed a promotional app with recipes, a slideshow, and an interactive map with links to the chefs, farms, and artisans featured in the book.
This was an absolutely delicious project to work on. I not only directed photography, food, and prop styling but also designed the book.
Dell’s inaugural issue of their high-end editorial print journal for C-Suite executives. The theme of this publication was “the human side of tech.”
The finished product includes a smyth-sewn binding which allows the journal to lay flat. The cover is coated with a soft-touch matte laminate and the logotype is foil-stamped.
My work included the following:
• Co-led a hands-on workshop with the client to determine editorial direction and overall look and feel.
• Designed publication and presented page designs, infographic, illustration, and photography style.
• Recruited a small creative team and collaborated with them and editors to develop stories visually.
• Art directed, designed, and oversaw production of all pages.
I conceived, directed, and developed the visual character of this home design magazine, launched in 2003. I directed all photography and styling, including prop styling interiors on location. I also worked closely with the editor to develop article concepts. This was a very enjoyable experience, combining my professional skills with my personal interest in home design.
In collaboration with editors I developed and designed this training guide prototype for a publishing partnership with Tough Mudder.®
I directed the redesign and oversaw acquisition of all new stock photography for this complete revision and update of a cornerstone backlist title.
We gave this best-selling backlist title a much-needed facelift with a new cover and interior design and photography.
